Saints Row: Gat out of Hell review: shout at the devil | Polygon

Added: 23.01.2015 15:14 | 1 views | 0 comments

Polygon: "Since the release of its comparatively down-the-middle first entry, Saints Row has thrived by taking itself progressively less seriously. In Saints Row IV alone, it blew up Earth, transformed into a 16-bit brawler and made its lead the first super-powered President of the United States. It was subversively irreverent, but always laughing with its audience, never at them. But in the standalone Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell, Volition may have taken the joke too far."

Neil writes "The Saints are going to hell with the latest standalone expansion in the franchise. Even without having to splash the cash on the main game to play it, is it worthy of a purchase?"

GC: "Over the course of the Saints Row series, the Third Street Saints have taken over their town, become adored energy drink magnates, witnessed the destruction of Earth, become superheroes in the Matrix, saved Santa Claus and more... It only stands to reason that shooting Satan in the face wouldn't be much of a leap. Gat Out Of Hell picks up right after the end of SRIV, and sees the player's character kidnapped by the devil during a birthday party. Naturally, Johnny Gat and Kinsey jump into action, cross the dimensional barrier, and head out to save them. "

Escapist: "Fans of Saints Row 4 won't be disappointed in the ridiculous follow-up, but first-timers may want to play through some of the earlier titles in the series before this delicious dessert."

VVV: "It's official: the most watched TV show in the world is making a welcome return to our screens this week, as a certain pokey motoring show called Top Gear reaches its 22nd series in the season premiere airing Sunday January 25th. The developers of Saints Row appear to be avid admirers of Britain's best-loved car show, as a new video promoting the recent Saints Row IV Gat Out of Hell expansion mimics the show's style to great effect."

PCG: " I love Saints Row IV. It's funny, silly and, for a game that features a cast of sociopaths, surprisingly warm hearted. It's also polarising with some former fans unhappy with the series' transformation into an absurd comedy ensemble. I'm not one of them, and it's important you know how much I enjoy the Saints' last outing, because I don't love Gat Out of Hell. I don't hate it, by any means; but it seldom displays the spark of creativity that made the last two games so good. Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell is a standalone expansion for Saints Row IV. Rather than "The Boss" the moldable agent of chaos at the centre of all previous games you play as returning characters Johnny Gat and Kinzie Kensington. Through a ridiculous set-up involving Kinzie's birthday party and Aleister Crowley's ouija board, The Boss is kidnapped by Satan and forced to marry his daughter, Jezebel. Through an even more ridiculous series of events, the playable duo open their own portal to New Hades...
